The Great Artistic Value of Ancient Coins

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Old coins are fascinating. They can be studied in so many ways: as objects of art, as silent witnesses of times long gone, or to get clues about the economic and political conditions of ancient civilizations. The value of coins as historical documents is enormous.

Did you know that the very first known coins were made of an alloy of silver and gold? The reason seems to have been that this alloy, called “electrum” was found naturally in riverbeds in the area — the kingdom of Lydia in what is now the western part of Turkey, near the Mediterranean coast.

The ruler of Lydia of about 600 B.C. had arrived at the excellent idea of issuing clumps of electrum with a standardized weight, and marking them as such with a stamp. The result was what we call a coin. These ancient coins look very coarse to us, the are just little bean-shaped clumps of precious metal with a stamped symbol on one side. This symbol which identifies them as coins is usually an animal, such as a lion, often quite skillfully rendered.

Modern measurements of these early coins reveal that their weight is surprisingly constant. The weight of different coins of the same denomination varies only very slightly.

Pretty soon, coins appeared all over the eastern part of the Mediterranean area, now they were produced by the various Greek city-states. The ancient Greek coins soon acquired the look of coins as we are used to see them: flat circular discs with designs on both sides. These Greek coins were almost always made of pure silver.

The city of Athens controlled some very productive silver mines, which made Athens a powerful force in the area. Coins were used to pay mercenary soldiers, which meant that if you had much silver you were likely to win a war.

Another, more pleasing, aspect of early Greek coinage is the very high aestetic appeal of these coins. My personal opinion is that certain ancient Greek coins are the most beautiful coins ever produced in the history of coinage — including even the most spectacular modern coins such as the Morgan silver dollar.

Using very primitive tools, the ancient coin makers achieved fantastic results. The later history of coins is for the most part a history of artistic decline. Some coins issued under the Roman empire do show great artistic merit, but as time goes on it seems not only the Empire declines but also the appeal of the coins.

Coins produced during medieval times, in countries like England, are very coarse and the quality of the engraving is amateurish. It seems there are no longer any skilled craftsmen engaged in coin production. In my opinion they have no artistic value whatsoever, especially by comparison to the superb Greek coins made seventeen centuries earlier.

Choosing A Paling Fence Contractor

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Paling fences in Melbourne are a dime a dozen but paling fence contractors are not. Your search for a tradesman to erect your timber fence should be thorough. I will explain why.

My search for a paling  fence contractor began online. There were numerous options but I did not simply choose the ones on the first page of the search engines. I would have looked at maybe 15-20 different websites.

I then ask questions to get a feel for the guy I am talking to. One question I ask is “Are you a qualified Carpenter?”. I have had some interesting replies to this. One told me that he was not. He was a public servant but wanted to work outdoors so he bought himself a trailer and a nail gun and started his own paling fence business. Obviously this phone call ended quickly.

Don’t be afraid to ask if they are a carpenter. You want the absolute best timber paling contractor to do your fence job so don’t settle for nothing but the best. Sure, the job may cost a touch more but for the sake of having a professional job done, it is worth it.

You will want to hire a contractor who is busy. This tells you he is at the top of his trade and in demand because of this. A timber  fence contractor in Melbourne who tells you he can do your job anytime probably has limited work on due to their previous work standards.

One final point to keep in mind is that at the completion of the job it might look great and you are happy. Go back and look at your timber paling fence in a week or two and check to see if the fence has started to lean or any other imperfections. If there is, get straight on the phone to them and let them know.

Timber fences Melbourne is operated by a qualified Carpenter with over 16 years experience in erecting timber paling fences, timber gates, timber decking, picket fences and any other carpentry need.

Top 5 Questions Asked Before Starting Driving Lessons

Friday, March 27th, 2009

When you wish to start learning to drive in the UK, you are bound to have a lot of questions. Here are the top 5 questions new learner drivers tend to ask.

1. What do I need to do before I can start driving?
You must have a Provisional driving Licence. You can obtain this by completing the driving licence application form D1 and photo card application form D750 which are available from most post offices.

2. How often should I have my driving lessons?
As often as you can afford if you wish to pass the driving test quickly. It is recommended though that you have at least 1 session of 1.5 hours per week of regular training. Driving instructors will structure your driving lessons to suit your individual needs. This can often depend on what time you have available and how often you can afford to take lessons.

3. What is the cheapest way of booking my driving lessons?
You can reduce the cost of learning to drive by taking advantage of block booking discounts which most driving schools will offer. Paying for each individual lesson is the most expensive way to learn to drive.  You can often obtain discounts by paying for as little as five lessons in advance there are many driving schools that offer this.

4. How many driving lessons will I need to take?
Every driver is different and will learn at a different pace. The DSA (Driving Standards Agency) mention that those who have passed their driving test have had an average of 45 hours professional tuition and 22 hours of private practice. Your driving instructor should use the DSA driver record so that you can see your strengths & weaknesses and monitor your progress.

5. Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can start my driving lessons?
Not at all. In fact it is a good idea to learn the theory whilst you are learning the practical side of driving as it can bring the subject alive making it easier to understand and remember. Also, remember that the theory training will help your practical driving and the practical driving will help your theory training.

You can find answers to many more questions you may have or even ask questions at the Driving Knowledge Base / FAQs.

Do you feel SAD?

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Most of us know what it feels like to be tired. And I’m guessing that most of us know how sluggish we feel on a cold, dark winter’s day. In fact it’s so natural to feel like that that most of us take it for granted.

But what many people don’t know is that daylight has a very dramatic effect on how you feel. Both the amount and quality of light has an impact. Which of us hasn’t felt wonderful in the warm glow of a beautiful sunset?

Research shows that light stimulates the senses. Light is energy, after all. And light can give you more energy which in turn can help you less lethargic.  Is it any wonder then that people wake easily in the summer months, but often have trouble in the dark winter months? That’s why some people use special lighting, such as the HF3461.

When light falls onto your eyes your brain gets a message to produce cortisol. That stimulates you, because it’s the energy hormone. When it’s time to wake up in the morning a good bathing of light is important so that your hormones are better balanced and you’ll feel more energetic right from the get-go.

But what do you do if you don’t get enough natural light? That’s when devices such as the Philips HF3461 can help. It’s classed as a medical device. That’s right, the Philips hf3461 wake up is actually classifed as a medical device.

Offering up to 400 Lux light intensity, it easily meets  the level of 250 Lux that is required to affect energy hormones so you wake up full of energy. And for easy reading a light level of 300 to 400 Lux is ideal to avoid eye-strain, so such lighting devices are great for catching up on your favourite novel before bed!

Only you know whether you have trouble waking each morning, but remember that light can help. And if you don’t have a suitable natural source of light - for example if your bedroom window is obscured by other buildings - then a specialist light might just be the thing you need.

Start Your Own Home Based Business

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Affiliate Funnel System - Although we have all heard about home based business scams, credulity still remains an issue as many people can’t believe it could happen to them. There are a multitude of scam types as there are opportunities to actually make money from good home based business ideas. Here are a few things that should and make you avoid scams and scammers when working online.

First of all, you should start by never believing those who claim that the home based business solutions they have for you generate hundreds if not thousands of dollars every week. Plus, plenty of sites claim that no experience is necessary and the work time is minimum. However, few such sites actually tell one what exactly the job is about; further details are available only if you pay a fee or if you make call at a provided phone number.

Yes, a home based business can generate lots of money but only in time, with plenty of effort and real experience in the activity field you cover. Those who claim that experience is not necessary lie, therefore, do not rush for easy-made money as only winning at the lottery and or getting an inheritance bring unexpected wealth. Yet, scammers will tell you lots of other lies too. If you visit sites that recommend wonder home based business ideas, you’ll see lots of capitalized words testimonials and other stuff from people who really made it! A great guide which shows you how to get started with your own home based business and which I know personally that it isn’t a scam is the Affiliate Funnel System Course. If you want to know what it’s all about check out my Affiliate Funnel System Bonus.

The faking of the success stories function as a means of manipulation, instigating the desire to get wealthy that lies in every subconscious. Lots of marketing strategies are for the creation of such web sites that promise you the blessed land of fortune and claim to have all the tricks up their sleeve for the management of a home based business. The entire advertising show is put up for the naive searcher who is desperate to find an alternative source of income and is ready to pay a small fee for the magic formulas.

The most common of investments required for home based business launching is a tax for a comprehensive list of companies who employ home workers. Two more types of messages that should warn you there is something wrong with an offer are related to the negative feeling you get because of not answering the invitation. It may feel like only $15 stand between you and the chance of a lifetime, but you are too afraid to be successful.

Or in the least aggressive of cases you are invited by a friend, colleague or relative to a reunion where you’ll be offered the chance to enter a great business by purchasing a product and promoting it further on.

One of the best guides on the Internet is the Affiliate Funnel Secrets Course which shows you secret ways to start your own home based business. Check out my Affiliate Funnel System Bonus to get an idea what this course is all about.

RentinNerja Changes Name To RentIn-Nerja

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

As the SEO specialist for the RentIn Group I am responsible for the smooth operation of Search Engine Marketing and natural rankings within the search engines !  Under normal circumstances the development of the Apartment Rentals / Villa Rentals sites for locations across Spain is generally business as usual, yet the original Nerja site needs a slight name change to fit in with the other websites representing areas such as Mijas, Marbella and Javea.

Now this is a worrying time!  The transfer of content etc is not the problem, its keeping the visitor traffic from the search engines coming to the site which presents the problem when changing domain names.  Why? . . . because all of the links already listed by Google are all pointing to the old domain name, which provides the “authority” count for Google as part of its valuation on how important the site is compared to every other site on the same subject.  So the question for me is how do I go about transferring all of this good ‘authority’ indexed by Google - over to the new domain and avoid loosing our position within Googles Search Results.

Clearly there’s a lot of links within Blogs, reviews and forums where folk have referenced the Nerja Villa Rentals web site and there’s very little chance of getting those links changed, so we run the risk of losing the “link juice” from most of them.  Thankfully we are holding onto the original domain and and there’s what is called a permanent redirect (code 301) that we can set on the original domains server which informs the search engines, when they follow the original links to the original site, that there is a new location for the content of the page and this new location for the Nerja Villa Rentals will be updated over time within the search engines and the transfer of most of the “authority” value of a site should move over to the new domain.

Google’s Matt Cutts mentioned in his blog that its a good idea to leave up the 301 redirections on the old domain for at least 18months…   clearly because there’s not guarantee that Google will cover the whole of the inbound links/web pages of a sight within a shorter period of time.  Of course, this means continuing to pay the domain and hosting fees of the old domain along with the new domain.  However, under the circumstances and the importance of maintaining a decent position within Google for Nerja Accommodation Rental then we have no other option.

Balloons

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Introduction

When you think of the word ‘Balloons’ what thoughts appear in your mind? Is it simple balloons you blow up for children’s parties, or balloons that fly off on their own, or the special balloons for key events like the ones produced for the wedding of Charles and Diana? There are now so many different types of balloons on the market that you can get almost anything for everything any event you like.

So what exactly is a balloon? One definition defines a balloon as a flexible bag which you fill with air or some other type of gas, such as helium or hydrogen. The early balloons would have been made with non flexible material but modern balloons are made with latex so they have great elasticity and can be pumped up to much larger sizes.

History of Balloons

The first known balloons were made in Central and Southern America by the Aztec Indians. They were made out of the bowels of cats which were carefully cleaned then turned inside out. They were sewn with special vegetable thread that had the property of sticking to itself when dried in the sun and creating an almost airtight seal. The balloons were then made into air filled model animals and burned at the top of the Aztec pyramid as an offering to the sun god. (The first example of balloon modelling). A Portuguese priest, Bartolomeu de Gusmao, held the first public exhibition of a balloon in the Portuguese Court in Lisbon in 1709 which was probably made from an animal bladder that stretched when filled with air. The rubber balloon was invented in 1824 by a Michael Faraday and was filled with hydrogen to be used in his experiments with hydrogen. But the familiar latex balloon did not appear until 1847.

The early rubber balloons were sold in America in Parks and Circuses for a penny each. Although the latex balloon was manufactured in London in the mid 1800’s the mass production of them did not appear until much later in 1931.

As technology has become more advanced so has the world of balloons. Now balloons can be made from rubber, latex, polychloroprene or nylon. They can be filled with air, helium, hydrogen or water. Filling the balloon with air can be done with the mouth, a manual pump(such as a hand pump), or electric inflator or with compressed gas. The balloons are used for many differing purposes, and decorated in numerous ways to fit the event.

Some balloons are purely for decoration, others are ideal for specialist functions because of their low density and relatively low cost. The balloon’s properties have led to them being used in a wide range of other applications in the areas of meteorology, military defense, medical treatment, and transportation.

Types of Balloons

Party Balloons

The most common and familiar types of balloons are the party balloons. These are frequently bought in small packets and blown up by mouth to create a festive scene for children’s parties and other kinds of celebratory events where mylar balloons make all the difference. These days I often see a cluster of balloons at the entrance to a house or hall to indicate where the party is being held. The balloons come in many different sizes and colours and can have printing on the face which expands as the balloon is inflated. Party Balloons are mostly made of natural latex tapped from rubber trees. The rubber’s elasticity makes the volume variable. Balloons filled with air usually hold their size and shape much longer.

Helium Balloons

Balloons which float upwards are filled with the gas helium which is lighter than air. So for an event where balloons are let off into the atmosphere, they will need to be helium balloons. Helium filled rubber balloons typically only retain their buoyancy for a few days. The enclosed helium atoms are smaller than the pores in the latex through which they escape. To increase the float time of a helium balloon for a week or more, the inside of the balloons can be coated with a special polymer solution to reduce the leakage of the helium.

Water Balloons

The water balloons are often smaller than regular balloons and made from thin rubber so that they can be easily broken. They are filled with water and are intended for children to throw at each other as a game or practical joke with the aim of getting each other wet. They may also be used in competitions or games.

Foil Balloons

In the late 1970s along came the foil balloon. These are made of thin non-stretch metalized plastic film or mylar. They are much more expensive and made an appearance at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana causing quite a stir. These balloons have attractive shiny reflective surfaces and can be printed with color pictures, logos and patterns to customize them. The most important property of metalized nylon for balloons is its ability to keep the helium gas from escaping for several weeks because it is less permeable. Foil balloons then have the advantage of being light weight, longer-lasting, with increased buoyancy. They are perfect for parties, in-store decorations, special celebrations and for gifts.

Animal-Shaped Balloons

Metalized nylon balloons can be cut into the three dimensional shapes of animals and then printed to represent the chosen animal. Once inflated the balloons make very bright, decorative items for gifts or may be used as a theme for a special event. Screen printing is used to create the designs for these spectacular pieces.

Balloon Modelling and Balloons in Art

Balloon modelling is a popular entertainment for children and adults alike. A Balloon artist twists and ties inflated tubular balloons into shapes resembling animals or even people. Sometimes they are called balloon sculptures, not to be confused with those cited below. When I have watched these artists at work I have often wondered why the balloons don’t burst when they are working. The reason is that the type of latex used for balloon sculpture is made of extra-stretchy rubber so that they can be twisted and tied without bursting. These tiny tubular balloons are extremely difficult to inflate initially so often a pump is needed to get them started.

Balloon Sculptures

Professional party decorators may use hundreds of helium balloons to create balloon sculptures. These sculptures are often constrained because of the round shape of the balloons to simple arches or walls but on occasion more ambitious “sculptures” have been attempted. Sometimes balloons are used as table decorations for special events which will have 3 or 5 balloons to each bouquet. The decoration will usually include curled ribbon with an added weight to stop the balloons from floating away.

Professional balloon party decorators use electronic equipment to enable the exact amount of helium to fill the balloon. For non-floating balloons air inflators are used. Professional quality balloons differ from most retail packet balloons as they are bigger in size and made from 100% biodegradable latex.

Balloon Drops

I am sure you will have been to a party or dance where at the end of the evening hundreds of balloons fall from the ceiling to mingle amongst the participants. This is known as a balloon drop and is often performed at New Year’s Eve celebrations or at political rallies and conventions. It is a relatively low cost way of generating a festive atmosphere at the party climax, so everyone goes away feeling they have had a really good time.

If you want to create a balloon drop for your own event you will need to set up a large plastic bag or net overhead, which is suspended at a certain height. This is then filled with air-inflated balloons so that they will fall onto the target area below when the balloons are released. You will also need to devise a mechanism for releasing the balloons. Balloon drops may also be performed at many celebrations, including graduations and weddings.

Balloon Rockets

As a child I am sure you played the game of blowing up a balloon then letting it go while watching it speed around the room making a rude noise with everyone falling about laughing. These are called balloon rockets and I remember being enthralled and wondering how they worked. When the mouth of the balloon is released, the greater pressure of air inside forces its way out and the elasticity of the balloon contracts causing the balloon to be propelled forward. This is fundamentally how a rocket works. The balloon can also be filled with gases other than air, with similar results. Besides being simple toys, balloon rockets are a widely used teaching device to demonstrate physical principles and the functioning of a rocket. The balloon rocket is frequently used to demonstrate Newton’s third law in physics.

Balloon Publicity

Balloons releases or races are often used for Publicity at major events as well as for fund raising or raising awareness, where a company logo or message is printed onto the balloons. Contact your local balloon wholesalers for large quantities of balloons.

Balloon Releases

In Australia they had a fund raising event on 18th April for Make-A-Wish Day. The 5,000 released balloons make a dramatic sight as they rise across the bay marking the number of wishes granted since 1985.

If you are planning a balloon release or race of more than 5,000 balloons, it is a requirement that you apply in writing for permission to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) at least 28 days in advance. The CAA also like to be informed of balloon releases up to 5,000. A form can be obtained by calling either the NABAS office on 01989 762 204 or the Airspace Utilisation Section of the CAA on 020 7453 6599

Because of concerns about the bearing on the environment of large numbers of balloons being released, the NABAS - The Balloon Association have produced a code of conduct which can be found on their website at www.nabas.co.uk

Safety and Environmental Concerns

Balloons are made of natural rubber latex (NRL) which is a natural product coming from rubber trees that are grown in certain areas of the tropics. These are not trees that are cut down to produce the NRL. The NRL is obtained by tapping from mature trees and is a sustainable crop providing employment for many agricultural workers in some of the poorest areas of the world.

As a consequence of NRL cultivation and the consumption of latex products, the planting and maintenance of rubber tree plantations helps towards the prevention of tropical rainforest deforestation. This contributes significantly to the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, produced by industrialised nations and a major source of global warming.

Research shows that latex balloons which are completely natural coming from the Hevea tree degrade faster than oak leaves. Oxidation occurs first in the breakdown of latex and it begins within 60 minutes of a balloon being inflated. As the decaying process is by natural exposure nutrients are released into the soil. Most balloons used in releases today are made of bio-degradable latex.

An estimated 90/95% of balloons released rise to an altitude of 5 miles, at which height the cold will cause the balloon to become brittle and shatter into miniscule pieces. The small fragments then floating back to earth to degrade in the ground. Balloon fragments are unlikely to cause harm if accidentally ingested. This is because latex and the dyes used in latex colouring are non-toxic.

Printed latex balloons are a fantastic, low-cost and environmentally friendly way of advertising at promotions and events. All latex balloons supplied by B-Loony, the UK’s largest printed balloon manufacturer, are completely biodegradable. The code of conduct produced by NABAS for balloon releases gives advice to ensure the protection of our environment.

Manufacture of Balloons

Balloons are manufactured by their millions every day in many countries. The rubber is collected as liquid from a rubber tree and then sent to the factories where the liquid goes through a series of treatment processes. These processes include shaping and colouring operations and testing for quality. The end products are thousands balloons which provide a splash of colour and party atmosphere at celebrations and conferences or any event where a large number of people gather.

Conclusion

Toy balloons have been a source of pleasure and excitement throughout the world for many years. They have provided hours of entertainment and interest for children as well as being an educational resource. Non toy Balloons are being used for science, medicine and travel and are invaluable in helping us to learn about our world. Balloons I am sure will remain very alive and active on the world’s scene for many years to come.

Learn To Sing Better

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

If you would like to learn to sing better, then this guide will show you how. Specifically, we’re going to talk about the importance of correct breathing control, and why you shouldn’t “force” yourself to sing louder. By the time you’ve finished reading this guide, you should have a good idea of how you can learn to sing well.

Most beginning singers never realize how important correct breathing technique is, and because of this, they seriously limit their singing potential.

So what is correct breath control? The key is to make sure you are breathing with your lower stomach, instead of your upper chest. In fact, your chest should hardly move at all when you breath in this way.  Learning diaphragmatic breathing will give your singing voice far more power and control.

The next thing to consider, is making sure your don’t force yourself to sing louder. If you want to learn how to sing well, then it’s a good idea to practice singing softly with control, instead of using added volume to give your singing voice power.

Bear in mind that a powerful singing voice is developed through practice and control – not straining to be louder. So focus on controlling your tone and accuracy, before working on how loud you can sing.

In conclusion, this guide has shown you two important things to keep in mind when learning how to sing. These things were correct breathing technique, and practicing with a “soft” singing voice. Now that you know these two things, you will  find your singing practice time to be far more productive.
